Understanding Chemical Peels

Improves tone, texture, and clarity

Diminishes fine lines and mild pigmentation

Refines pores and improves acne

Enhances radiance with minimal downtime

What is it?

Chemical Peels are medically-performed exfoliation treatments that remove the outer layers of dead or damaged skin to reveal a fresher, smoother surface underneath. They help stimulate cell renewal, balance pigmentation, and improve overall skin tone and texture.

At AvenueMD, each peel is customized by Dr. Jennifer Salsberg to suit the patient’s skin type, concerns, and goals. From light, refreshing peels that enhance glow to deeper medical-grade peels that address more advanced concerns, every treatment is designed to achieve visible improvement while maintaining the skin’s integrity and health. Chemical peels are a key element of many of our AvenueMD facialsTM.

The result is skin that looks clearer, smoother, and more radiant—without compromising natural balance or comfort.

How does it work?

A carefully selected blend of medical-grade acids—such as glycolic, salicylic, lactic, trichloroacetic acid or retinoic acid—is applied to the skin to dissolve the bonds between dead cells and stimulate renewal. The strength, formulation, and duration of application vary depending on your needs.

Light peels provide a subtle refresh with little to no downtime, while medium or deep peels address deeper wrinkles, acne scars, and pigmentation more dramatically. The treatment typically lasts 20–30 minutes and may cause mild warmth or tingling during application.

Each peel is performed under physician supervision, ensuring both safety and efficacy. Post-treatment care is simple, with a tailored skincare plan provided to support healing and prolong results.

Recovery and downtime

Recovery time depends on peel depth. Light peels may cause mild redness or dryness for a day or two, while deeper peels can produce visible peeling for three to seven days. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately, using gentle skincare and diligent sun protection.

As the outer layer sheds, new skin appears smoother, more even, and more luminous. Results continue to improve over time as collagen production and cellular renewal increase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which type of peel is right for me?

Dr. Salsberg will select the most appropriate peel based on your skin type and goals. Options range from light “lunch-hour” peels for glow to deeper peels for texture and pigmentation correction.

How often should I have a Chemical Peel?

Light peels can be repeated every four to six weeks, while deeper peels may only be needed once or twice per year, depending on your skin and treatment goals.

What does the treatment feel like?

Patients typically feel mild tingling or warmth during the procedure, followed by a sensation similar to light sun exposure. Any redness or flaking is temporary and resolves naturally.

Can I wear makeup afterward?

Makeup can usually be applied after 24 hours for light peels. For deeper peels, it’s best to wait until any flaking has subsided and the new skin is smooth.

How soon will I see results?

You’ll notice an immediate improvement in radiance and smoothness, with continued refinement as the skin renews over the following week.

Can Chemical Peels be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Peels often complement microneedling, IPL Photofacial, or neuromodulator treatments as part of AvenueMD’s integrated skin optimization programs.
