What is it?

A Lip Lift is a surgical procedure that enhances the appearance of the upper lip by reducing the vertical distance between the base of the nose and the upper lip (known as the philtrum). As this distance lengthens with age—or may be naturally long—the upper lip can appear thin, flat, or turned inward, even when volume is present.

Dr. Dimitrios Motakis performs Lip Lift surgery with a highly precise, conservative approach. Rather than adding volume, the procedure repositions the lip to reveal more of the natural pink lip tissue, creating improved shape, definition, and balance with the surrounding facial features.

The result is a refreshed, youthful lip appearance that looks entirely natural and integrates seamlessly with facial expression.

How does it work?

The most common technique is a subnasal (bullhorn) lip lift, where a small, carefully shaped incision is placed discreetly beneath the base of the nose.

Through this incision, a precise amount of skin is removed, and the upper lip is gently elevated and secured into its new position. The incision is meticulously closed and concealed within the natural crease beneath the nose, making the scar difficult to detect once healed.

In select cases, a corner lip lift may be performed in combination. This is typically considered when the corners of the mouth are downturned or when the outer portions of the lip are particularly thin. This technique involves a small incision placed at the junction of the pink and white lip (the vermilion border) at the corners of the mouth. When performed with precision, the incision heals to become virtually imperceptible while subtly lifting the corners of the lips.

These procedures are typically performed under sedation, or under general anesthesia when combined with other surgical procedures. The procedure takes approximately an hour when performed on its own.

Because the change is structural rather than volumetric, results are stable and long-lasting.

Recovery and downtime

Initial swelling and mild tightness are normal for the first few days. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, which is easily managed with prescribed medication.

Sutures are usually removed within 5 days, and patients often return to work and social activity within 2 weeks. Swelling continues to improve over several weeks, with the final result becoming more refined as healing progresses.

Scarring fades gradually over time and is typically well-concealed beneath the nose. At AvenueMD, we offer advanced laser treatments that help incisions heal smoothly and fade more quickly over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is a good candidate for a Lip Lift?

Ideal candidates include individuals with a long philtrum, thin or downturned upper lip, or those seeking lip enhancement without fillers. Patients should be in good health and have realistic expectations.

How is a Lip Lift different from lip fillers?

A Lip Lift changes lip position and shape permanently, while fillers add temporary volume. Many patients choose a Lip Lift to improve lip definition without repeated injections.

Will the results look natural?

Yes. Dr. Motakis' approach prioritizes proportion and subtlety. The goal is to enhance natural anatomy—not exaggerate it.

Is the scar visible?

The incision is placed within the natural crease beneath the nose and typically heals very discreetly.  At AvenueMD, patients have access to a range of advanced laser technologies designed to help incisions fade away more quickly. With proper care, the scar becomes difficult to notice over time.

Are the results permanent?

Yes. Because the procedure alters the structure of the upper lip, results are long-lasting and do not require maintenance.

Can a Lip Lift be combined with other procedures?

Yes. A Lip Lift can often be combined with Rhinoplasty, Chin Augmentation, a Facelift or other facial rejuvenation procedures to achieve comprehensive facial balance.
